Day Trips from Seoul: Gapyeong, Korean Folk Village and Beyond

Seoul’s surrounding provinces - Gyeonggi and Gangwon - contain some of Korea’s most visited attractions. Most are accessible in under two hours on public transport, making them straightforward day trips from the capital.

Gapyeong: Nami Island, Petite France, Garden of Morning Calm

Gapyeong County (가평군) is the most popular day-trip destination from Seoul, partly because it clusters three very different attractions within easy reach of each other.

Nami Island (남이섬)

Nami Island is a small river island famous for its tree-lined avenues and seasonal beauty. The allée of tall ginkgo and silver birch trees is photographed year-round: green in summer, golden in autumn, and bare against snow in winter. The island became internationally known through the Korean drama Winter Sonata and has since developed into a cultural space with sculptures, cafes, and performance stages.

Getting there: ITX-Chuncheon from Cheongnyangni to Gapyeong (1 hour, KRW 4,800 as of 2026) + taxi to ferry terminal + 5-minute ferry. Total travel time from central Seoul: approximately 1 hour 40 minutes.

Entrance: KRW 16,000 adults (includes ferry), as of 2026.

Best time: Autumn (October–November) for foliage; spring for a quieter off-peak visit.

Petite France (쁘띠프랑스)

A themed cultural village styled after a French provincial town, Petite France houses a small museum, performance stage, guesthouse, and themed galleries. It is 10 minutes by taxi from Gapyeong Station.

Entrance: Approximately KRW 12,000 adults as of 2026.

Note: It is primarily a photogenic novelty - plan 1–2 hours maximum.

Garden of Morning Calm (아침고요수목원)

One of Korea’s best botanical gardens, spanning 33 themed sections. It is seasonal in character - the spring tulip display, summer hydrangeas, and winter illumination festival are each worth a specific visit.

Getting there: Taxi from Gapyeong Station, approximately KRW 8,000–10,000 one way.

Entrance: Approximately KRW 11,000 adults (KRW 14,000 during illumination season, November–March) as of 2026.

Korean Folk Village (한국민속촌), Yongin

Korean Folk Village preserves around 260 traditional buildings from the Joseon dynasty, relocated from different regions of Korea. Artisans demonstrate traditional crafts - rope making, pottery, weaving - and there are regular performances of farmers’ dance (농악) and tightrope walking.

It’s a genuine alternative to the palace complexes in Seoul for understanding pre-modern Korean life, with the advantage of feeling more immersive and less formal.

Getting there: Metro line 1 to Suwon Station (50 minutes from Seoul Station), then dedicated shuttle bus. Shuttle runs approximately every 30 minutes; journey time 15 minutes.

Entrance: Approximately KRW 20,000 adults as of 2026. Combined tickets with folk performances are available.

Duration: Allow 3–4 hours.

Pocheon Art Valley (포천아트밸리)

A former granite quarry converted into a sculpture park and outdoor arts space, Pocheon Art Valley is a less-visited option suited to visitors who have done the main Gapyeong circuit.

The quarry pit has filled with turquoise water called Cheorwon Lake, surrounded by sheer granite walls. A monorail (approximately KRW 2,000 one way as of 2026) runs up from the parking area to the main quarry. The surrounding planetarium charges separately.

Getting there: Bus from Seoul Dongbu Bus Terminal to Pocheon, then local bus or taxi to the valley. Total journey approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.

Entrance: Approximately KRW 5,000 adults as of 2026, monorail separate.

Suwon Hwaseong Fortress

Closer to Seoul than Gapyeong and accessible in under an hour, Suwon is sometimes treated as a half-day trip rather than a full day. The UNESCO-listed Hwaseong Fortress encircles part of the old city - the 5.7km wall circuit takes around 90 minutes to walk.

Getting there: Direct from Seoul Station on metro line 1 (approximately 50 minutes).

Entrance: KRW 1,500 adults as of 2026. Free to walk the wall; some gate structures charge entry.

Using Guided Tours vs Going Independently

Guided day tours from Seoul typically cost KRW 50,000–90,000 per person (as of 2026) and bundle transport, a guide, and two to three sites. They save navigation complexity and are worth considering for the Gapyeong trio, where timing connections between Nami, Petite France, and the garden independently requires planning.

Going independently is straightforward for Suwon and Korean Folk Village, which are well-served by public transport. For Pocheon, a tour or private taxi is more convenient.
