Boryeong Mud Festival 2026

The Boryeong Mud Festival is held annually on Daecheon Beach, roughly two hours south of Seoul on the Yellow Sea coast. What began in 1998 as a marketing campaign for Boryeong’s local cosmetics industry - promoting the mineral content of the region’s tidal mudflats - has grown into one of South Korea’s most internationally recognised summer events, drawing upwards of three million visitors across the 10-day run.

What happens at the festival

The festival covers a stretch of Daecheon Beach with a purpose-built mud zone containing a mud pool, mud slides, a mud obstacle course, a mud prison (a muddy holding area where strangers are encouraged to wrestle each other out), and a large open mud pit used for communal wallowing. A mud-grey tented area near the main stage hosts skincare demonstrations using products derived from Boryeong mud, which is marketed for its high mineral content including germanium and bentonite.

Evening concerts are a fixture of the festival, with K-pop and pop acts performing on the main beach stage. Fireworks displays run on selected nights during the second week. The beach itself remains open for swimming outside the designated mud zones, and the surrounding Daecheon area has a full strip of restaurants, pensions and convenience stores.

Practical information

Entry to the mud zone costs approximately 10,000 to 15,000 KRW (verify current pricing at the official festival site before visiting). Locker and shower facilities are available on-site for a small additional fee. Bring a change of clothes you do not mind discarding, as mud stains fabric permanently. Swimwear or old clothing is standard dress code for the mud zone.

Getting to Boryeong from Seoul is straightforward: take the Janghang Line from Seoul Station or Yongsan to Daecheon Station (approximately 2 hours). From the station, local buses and taxis cover the short distance to the beach. Trains back to Seoul fill quickly on Sunday evenings, so book return tickets before you arrive.

July on the west coast of Korea is hot and humid, with temperatures regularly above 30°C. Sunscreen is essential, and the mineral-heavy mud will not substitute for it. The festival draws very large crowds on weekends, particularly during the second week. If you prefer a more relaxed experience, aim for a weekday in the first half of the run.
